Evolutionary assembly of flowering plants into sky islands

چکیده

Alpine floras (plants in the vegetation belts above climatic treelines) experience cold climates, particularly temperate mountains during winter, but they are generally species-rich. Yet, biogeographers have not determined whether these represent evolutionarily independent convergent assemblages drawn from their regional floras, or originated particular clades pre-adapted to harsh conditions. Here, we analyse evolutionary relationships of angiosperm (flowering plant) species 63 alpine worldwide (~7,000 species) comparison with (~94,000 and entire global flora. We find that each represents an assemblage more closely related than respective floras. The degree phylogenetic clustering tropical exceeds mountains. However, relation flora, phylogenetically subsets colonized areas interglacial periods. conclude include a few dominant families evolved tolerance low temperature, niche conservatism explains clustering, compared pools. By analysing worldwide, authors

The evolutionary root of flowering plants.

Correct rooting of the angiosperm radiation is both challenging and necessary for understanding the origins and evolution of physiological and phenotypic traits in flowering plants. The problem is known to be difficult due to the large genetic distance separating flowering plants from other seed plants and the sparse taxon sampling among basal angiosperms. Here, we provide further evidence for ...

Conserving Evolutionary Process in the Sky Islands of Northern Mexico

The mixed pine-oak woodlands of the Sierra Madre mountain chains in Mexico are a significant focus of biodiversity for North America. Harboring about a third of the world’s pine and oak species, this highelevation region is a major center of endemism for birds, reptiles, and amphibians, including several endemic bird genera such as the thick-billed (Rhynchopsitta pachyrhncha) and maroon-fronted...

Environmental energy and evolutionary rates in flowering plants.

The latitudinal gradient in species richness is a pervasive feature of the living world, but its underlying causes remain unclear. We evaluated the hypothesis that environmental energy drives evolutionary rates and thereby diversification in flowering plants. We estimated energy levels across angiosperm family distributions in terms of evapotranspiration, temperature and UV radiation taken from...

Sex chromosomes in flowering plants.

Sex chromosomes in dioecious and polygamous plants evolved as a mechanism for ensuring outcrossing to increase genetic variation in the offspring. Sex specificity has evolved in 75% of plant families by male sterile or female sterile mutations, but well-defined heteromorphic sex chromosomes are known in only four plant families. A pivotal event in sex chromosome evolution, suppression of recomb...
